Making SineWave and Pieces free…

Yes, from today my two iPhone apps SineWave and Pieces will be available from the app store, free of charge. If the apps still show pricing, give it a few hours and try again. I will continue to work on and update these applications, and as always, the updates will be free too. If you purchased SineWave or Pieces, thank you very much, you helped to make these apps free, relax in comfort knowing that you won’t have to pay for a new version again.

I have been programming for over 4 years now, so not that long, but being self taught I have found that I enjoyed writing software more for ‘fun’, rather than business. I believe that I write better software when I want to, rather than trying to ship a product by a date to keep the investors happy. Software brings power to computers but free software brings power to users. I’m not saying that charging for software is wrong, far from it, what I’m saying is that I don’t have the time or knowledge to offer such a service, yet. In time I may release another paid application but it will have to be pretty special.

I’m going to contradict myself a little here, I get paid to work with and write software for  my new employer, but unlike my own company, I don’t have sleepless nights worrying about how I’m going to make it all happen. I’m given a set space of time, the specs, goals and a guaranteed pay check at the end of the day, it’s like writing free software but with a challenge to keep it interesting.

While the apps have not been runaway success, they have paid their dues to the investors so I now have the opportunity to return them to the people. I wrote SineWave for my mates at college, that costs enough without having to buy the apps too. I want people to enjoy the little projects that I develop, whether it be on your iPhone, Mac, Palm or web browser, if you like it, use it and tell your friends.

I’m going to continue working on my apps and some new projects in the pipeline (iPad) so please stay tuned. If you have any ideas for a project that you would like me to work on, please don’t hesitate to contact me via the website. Over the next couple of days I will update the website accordingly.

SineWave 1.2 ‘Aries’ with iPad UI

SineWave with iPad UIWell the iPad is here and we are on the front step to make sure our apps are ready for the launch. Check out the screen above of a working version of the landscape iPad UI for SineWave 1.2 Aries. Read on for more details and new pricing plans.

SineWave will be ready for the launch of the iPad, complete with both portrait and landscape interfaces. All the features from the iPhone version will be present, as well as refined documentation that will also be available in the iPhone version. The future versions of SineWave will try to keep the features even but a more likely prospect is that the iPad version of SineWave will have more powerful features.

As planned the pricing for SineWave 1.2 will rise to the next tier ($2.49AUD), which will include full support for the iPad. Current owners of SineWave 1.1+ will get the update for free! So to be ready for the launch and beat the price rise, purchase SineWave at the current price ($1.19AUD) today with confidence that your transition to the iPad will be flawless. Check out the website or head to the iTunes store to purchase.

We are very excited about the iPad and have some very cool new projects planned for it! This is the future of computing and quite frankly, it’s very, very cool. Please stay tuned.

UPDATE: We are unfortunately not able to guarantee that current users will be able to upgrade for free. It looks like we will have to run the iPad version as a separate app, as you simply cannot change the UI of an iPhone app to meet the high standards of the iPad. We have some very cool ideas and working concepts of how the iPad version of SineWave will work.

SineWave 1.1 Released

After a long wait between the original launch and now, the update for my first app is finally here. SineWave has continued with pretty consistent sales which prompted me to say thank you by doing a major rebuild and redesign in preparation for future updates. While the first version was based on the classic HP calculators, this version now sports a thoroughly modern and slick interface that not only looks sweet, but is a lot easier to use. The interface has a much cleaner and more logical interface, using the navigation bar like most modern apps to it’s advantage.

Each calculator has received a code overhaul and interface re-thought. The results are a lot more accurate and take advantage of the new settings feature. I went back to the drawing board to create an input interface that worked with the theme, provided instruction without actually having any and made the app easier to grasp. In the end I came up with a very custom text field and improved keyboard interface, that work like normal while looking a whole lot better.

As mentioned, you can now customise the new data saving feature, decimal places and rounding mode from the new settings panel, accessible from the home screen. The options work with all the calculators (Not including Documentation), allowing you to make SineWave work the way you want it to!

And finally, the instantaneous calculator has a new button, called ‘Copy-to-peak’, that will paste the peak value from a Basic mode calculation into the peak input field, with the tap of a finger. A nice and very much needed synergy, in the future, more of the calculators will have more of a connection with each other, adding even more usefullness to this neat app.

The updates 1.2 and 1.3 are planned to introduce new features and calculators. If you wish to have a calculator included in a future release, please drop a comment!

Check out the website and iTunes.

Pieces 1.1 ‘Orion’ Update

Yesterday Apple approved the 1.1 orion update to Pieces in record time. 1.1 was mean to be a major update but a recent bug find will push those new features to 1.2. This update includes bug fixes and a new twitter engine.

Twitter Icon AMTwitterEngine

The first version of Pieces used the stunning twitter engine developed by Matt Gemmell for Twitterfic, an engine that was able to perform every aspect of twitter for an app, but as Pieces only needs to post status updates, this was a significant amount of code not being used. Hours after Pieces was submitted to Apple I began work on developing a more lightweight and simpler twitter engine to be included in Pieces and QuickPost. My engine is an eighth of the size of Matt Gemmell’s engine, bringing instant performance increases when using it in Pieces and reducing the overall app download size. Over the next couple of updates I will further refine the engine as well as the whole ’social’ aspect of the app so stay tuned.

Refinements & Bug Fixes

The reason for pushing this update earlier than expected was the discovery of a bug that caused the ‘month view’ to only show entries from 2009 and not 2010 as it should. This has been fixed and now works perfectly, sorry for any inconvenience caused. Some small database refinements have also been implemented so you should see some performance increases when browsing and viewing your entries.

Keep a look out for Pieces 1.2 over the coming weeks as it will bring further exciting interface and software refinements that will make using the app, so much more enjoyable. Thanks to everyone who bought the app and if you haven’t yet, get it now before the price rise when 1.2 is released! Check it out on the Pieces website.

Pieces: The Concept

Pieces is my new iPhone application that is styled like a journal but it’s purpose is a little different. I have had users come up to me and say they have used it as a to do list, notes and even for gaming. So I thought I would take a little time to explain the concept behind this application.

A normal journal is for people that sit down at the end of the day and write down each thing that they did, whether it was exciting or not. Each journal entry in Pieces is limited to 140 characters, the same as twitter, to keep it short and sweet. You don’t use Pieces at the end of the day, you use it when something interesting, scary, exciting etc is happening. When you reach for a camera to capture the moment, grab Pieces and save it forever. Think of it as a personal twitter, it’s your life one moment at a time. Because each ‘piece’ is interesting, you are more inclined to go back and read it, compared to say a journal where you note down every mundane task that was completed on that day. When sitting around with a couple mates and a few drinks, grab Pieces out and reminisce all the crazy, stupid, exciting things that you have done together.

Head to the Pieces website to check out  all the neat features of the new application. If you like it, don’t forget to drop a little review or rating on iTunes :) I hope you like the app, I had fun making it and use it pretty much every day!

Alex Mills Design 2010

Only around a year late but what a way to open! Introducing Alex Mills Design 2010, a brand new hand crafted website and new iPhone application.

The website has been coming for a while now but I’m finally happy with both the design and codebase that powers it. It’s extremely clean and simple, so that you aren’t distracted from the real content being presented. My iPhone apps SineWave and Pieces now have a decent place to call home. This website is very important to me as it provides a base for all future projects to build from as well as representing me and my company.

Hand crafted using Coda from Panic, my challenge was to build my first full website without help from a cms and wysiwyg editors. In my opinion it turned out really nice, but as always, it will change and evolve over time. Both the SineWave and Pieces pages will get a design update when the respective updates are released, so keep an eye out!

Thanks to everyone who supported me, you bought my apps, said kind things and answered my questions. I hope you enjoy the result and look forward to the exciting things to come.
