Making SineWave and Pieces free…

Yes, from today my two iPhone apps SineWave and Pieces will be available from the app store, free of charge. If the apps still show pricing, give it a few hours and try again. I will continue to work on and update these applications, and as always, the updates will be free too. If you purchased SineWave or Pieces, thank you very much, you helped to make these apps free, relax in comfort knowing that you won’t have to pay for a new version again.

I have been programming for over 4 years now, so not that long, but being self taught I have found that I enjoyed writing software more for ‘fun’, rather than business. I believe that I write better software when I want to, rather than trying to ship a product by a date to keep the investors happy. Software brings power to computers but free software brings power to users. I’m not saying that charging for software is wrong, far from it, what I’m saying is that I don’t have the time or knowledge to offer such a service, yet. In time I may release another paid application but it will have to be pretty special.

I’m going to contradict myself a little here, I get paid to work with and write software for  my new employer, but unlike my own company, I don’t have sleepless nights worrying about how I’m going to make it all happen. I’m given a set space of time, the specs, goals and a guaranteed pay check at the end of the day, it’s like writing free software but with a challenge to keep it interesting.

While the apps have not been runaway success, they have paid their dues to the investors so I now have the opportunity to return them to the people. I wrote SineWave for my mates at college, that costs enough without having to buy the apps too. I want people to enjoy the little projects that I develop, whether it be on your iPhone, Mac, Palm or web browser, if you like it, use it and tell your friends.

I’m going to continue working on my apps and some new projects in the pipeline (iPad) so please stay tuned. If you have any ideas for a project that you would like me to work on, please don’t hesitate to contact me via the website. Over the next couple of days I will update the website accordingly.
